Depends: Scleral buckle surgery is probably about 90% successful. Scleral buckle surgery with gas (when combined with vitrectomy) may be successful 95% of the time, however, the indications for each vary from case to case and surgeon to surgeon. Also, "success" usually means that the retina is reattached, but that does not mean all vision has returned.

About 90% success : Is reported for primary uncomplicated scleral buckle surgeries. It is a very successful, though traditional type of retinal surgery that works well. The other surgery that can be used for retinal detachment is vitrectomy. It has gained popularity in recent years as an alternative to scleral buckle. Choice of procedure depends on surgeon and characteristics of the detachment. Ask your surgeon.
