It depends: Whether or not you are prescribed an antibiotic to take before your surgery may depend upon whether or not an infection is present or if you require antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent an infection due to a compromised medical condition. Patients who do not present with an infection or require antibiotic prophylaxis often are not given antibiotics. Antibiotics should be prescribed when indicated.
