Rarely: There has never been a clear use determined for the appendix, yet it can cause serious problems if it gets inflamed (acute appendicitis). In light of this, occasionally if a patient is undergoing abdominal surgery for an unrelated reason, there are some surgeons that may remove the appendix at that time, even though that was not the primary reason for surgery.
