Not Sure: You should not have to strain routinely for a bowl movement. I do not know what you mean by a "well balanced diet." if you getting proper fluids, eating fruits vegetables, fiber and whole grains you should be ok. Please consult with your physician.

Magnesium: Try drinking more water and eating more fiber. Also consider magnesium supplementation. Can use magnesium citrate or glycinate 200 mg tabs starting once a day and increase as needed.
