What Kind?: Retainers can cost between 100-300 per arch depending on what type and how complicated. Since they are custom made and each one is different it is hard to give you a better answer. Discuss the options with your dentist and get another opinion if you feel the need to compare. Just make sure you are comparing apples to apples - type of appliance, options, adjustments included etc.

You can't buy one!: Rather you go to a doctor to diagnose your problem and you get fitted for a retainer if that is what is indicated for you. If you want to know what that service would cost , make a few phone calls to orthodontists.

Need evaluation1st: Most if not all orthodontists will require that they see you first to evaluate your dental condition and bite in order to properly advise you what is best for your particular circumstances. Only then will they quote you a fee. Seek proper advice and not merely a fee.

Varies: Depends on type of retainer and your personal problem . Know that retainers do not, in general, straighten teeth. Ask your dentist to refer you to an orthodontic specialist to asses your need.
