Fairly common: Ptsd may result after any trauma perceived to be life-threatening. Studies show that about 25-33% of people in serious motor vehicle accidents have symptoms 30 days later. Typical symptoms include re-experiencing the accident through intrusive thoughts and dreams; avoiding situations reminiscent of the accident (like driving); increased physical arousal; emotional numbing otherwise.

Possible not a must: Ptsd is possible after a car accident but does not happen all the time. It depends on your past experiences and family history predispositions, your experience and sense of helplessness at the time accident. Initial signs of ptsd include panic attacks, fear of driving, disturbed sleep, low mood etc.
