PT and meds first: I would recommend you start with trying a combination of physical therapy and oral pain medication, including anti-inflammatories. Also consider an epidural steroid injection. Surgery should really be your last resort if these conservative treatments fail to provide relief or your symptoms progress.

No and 90% are : Treated without surgery. Your symptoms do not sound like they warrant surgery so give it time & try otc meds if no reasons not to use them & avoid activities that aggravate symptoms. Surgery is for disc herniations that do not get better after 12 weeks & the symptoms are severe enough to do surgery in the first place. Surgery is most predictable in relieving pain but not neurologic symptoms.
