Like sanding: When a tooth needs "shaving, " it is a procedure like sanding the edges of the teeth to provide spacing, contouring, etc. Normally no novocaine is needed and it can be completed very quickly depending on the desired results.

Also called IPR: Inter proximal reduction, stripping, or shaving, refers to thinning a tooth by removing enamel from between teeth. As this changes tooth shape it can affect how teeth fit each other and also affect gum health.

Reduction: "shaving" teeth is a term that some dentist use when referring to the removal of tooth enamel either between the teeth to allow for more room (often as part of invisalign treatment) or as a term that sounds less severe than "drilling" teeth when re-contouring them or adjusting the occlusion (bite).
