Is there a certain amount of fat that liposuction can get rid of?

5 liters for out-pt: For out-patient procedures, 5000 cc's is the recognised safe limit. Larger volume would require in-patient settings because the patient's fluid intake and output status would have to be carefully monitored.

5 Liters: 5 liters is considered a safe amount of fat removal with liposuction as an outpatient surgery.

Be careful......: When you ask such a question one is led to believe that you are looking at liposuction as a weight loss technique. It is not for weight loss. Liposuction is more properly a contouring procedure. Lose the weight first. :).

Risks increase: While there have been reports of massive liposuction of up to 18 liters of fat (-about 40 lbs) this is a rare exception and most physicians believe that outpatient volumes should be limited to approximately 5 liters depending on the unique circumstances of the individual. Any more than this may need to be observed in a hospital stay and increases risk of blood loss, hypovolemia, shock, and more...
