He was exaggerating: It just means you probably had really large tonsils. I don't know how old you are but adults who have had issue with their tonsils often have fragile tonsils that come apart as you are removing them. That's why adult tonsil surgery is harder than in kids. You are probably pretty sore, but you should be fine. They normally check them out to make sure there are no cellular abnormalities.
