Probably safe but : When you split an sr pill the wellbutrin (bupropion) becomes immediate release, ir. Doses more than 100 mg ir are not recommended in a single time. So if you are splitting a 150 mg sr, that's ok. But if you are splitting a 300 mg sr, there are risks involved in taking 150 mg ir including seizure in some people. A further split of the 150 mg ir into 2 doses may reduce risk yet allow a less shocking taper.

With your Docs help!: Ideally this should be done in conjunction with the prescribing physician. Stopping an antidepressant on your own is not a good idea. Most people do not experience withdrawal when they discontinue wellbutrin (bupropion). Officially you should not cut the sr tab in half. Unofficially if this is done cleanly and you do not crush the pill, the sustained release property will be maintained.
