Retina thinning: There are two types. Lattice dystrophy of the cornea is an uncommon cause of cornea clouding. Lattice degeneration of the retina are areas of thinning in the peripheral retina. Usually they don't cause any problems. They can however be thin enough to tear and cause a retinal detachment. If you have new floaters or flashes of light in your peripheral vision, see an ophthalmologist right away.

Retinal weakness: Lattice degeneration is a disease of the retina that predisposes a person to retinal tears or detachments. It occurs in about 10% of population and accounts for about 40 to 50 % of retinal detachments diagnosed. It's relatively common in nearsighted individuals. Treatment involves repairing the retinal tear or detachment.
