A 37-year-old member asked:

what are some ways to help an ankle heal faster?

Depending on problem: Proper immobilization and support is essential as well as adequate rest. Physical therapy is helpful after any fracture or soft tissue has sufficiently healed to reduce stiffness and swelling. Range of motion exercises at this stage also will help. In cases of delayed bone healing, the use of a bone stimulator may be beneficial. Discuss with your doctor.

We don't know: Older ankle replacements appear to last about 10 years. Newer generation replacements that came on the market about 2 years ago will hopefully last longer, but we don't have the studies to tell us yet.

Non Magnetic: They probably will not set off the metal detector as they are non-magnetic. And I have had no patient mention to me that their fracture hardware set off the detector.

A 44-year-old female asked:

I am 48 yrs old and my right heel has been hurting but now has gone up into ankle?

Dr. Fred Birnbaum
Podiatry 43 years experience
Heel pain: Having heel pain for some time changes your walk, so frequently other parts of the body start hurting too- the ankle, knee, hip and even the back. Also the other heel may start to hurt too from favoring the original one. There is also a possibility that a nerve on the inner aspect of your ankle is getting affected. See a podiatrist for quick help!
