No!: Medication and desensitization can make it possible to all but the most severe issues be able to play without significant issues.

No need: Most people with grass allergies are sensitive to the pollen, which is release in late spring/early summer. By the time football season comes in the fall, the level in the air should be very low. Even people with significant grass pollen allergies should be able to participate with the help of medications or desensitization (allergy shots) as others have suggested.

See an allergist: My colleague mentioned what needs to be done. However, in order to get there, take your son to a board-certified allergist. Also, desnsitisation therapy (allergy shots) will decrease the chance that he will develop asthma.
