Cavity formation: Bacteria in you mouth reside in the dental plaque. These bacteria metabolize the sugar from your diet and produce acid which can lead to demineralization of the enamel which can then progress to dental decay. Prevention of dental decay requires good oral hygiene to reduce plaque and bacteria on the teeth, reduced exposure to sugar, and preventative efforts including Fluoride and dental sealants.
