Depends: Most bone grafting procedures will entail some postoperative pain. Usually lasting from a day or two to up to a week for extensive grafting. Medications are very helpful- discuss your case specifically with your surgeon.

Maybe: The discomfort is not too bad which can last for a few days. However, patients have various threshold pain levels. It really depends on how invasive and the size of the bone graft. Of course the large the bone graft the more painful the recovery maybe.

Yes and no: First of all, to minimal the post op pain, all bone graft should be done in a healthy environment, i.e., no infection (tooth or gum). This can be achieved by a good cleaning and laser treated the local persistent site of infection. Antibiotic can be prescribed 1 week ahead, with anti inflammatory med taken prior to surgery. Stability of graft and full closure are important. Pain med given.

Mild-moderate: Depends on the case. If bone grafting is done for socket preservation after tooth extraction, no more discomfort than the extraction alone. If augmentation bone graft without extraction, depends on the location and size of the graft. If bone for grafting is autogenous (from your body), a separate incision and surgical site for graft harvesting will increase post op pain.
