It is bad sign: Kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, in men, the genitals and prostate when there is enough blood to be visible, the urine may look pinkish, red, or smoky brown (like tea or cola). This is called gross or frank hematuria. It takes very little blood in urine to be visible -- about 1/5 of a teaspoon in a ½ quart of urine. The treatment option depend on the reason. Please go and visit your family doct.

Depends on why?: The treatment will depend on the cause of the flank pain and the hematuria. It could be caused by different problems- from kidney stones, infection, etc -to malignancy. Please go to see your doctor as soon as possible and get yourself checked. If you smoke- please quit smoking. Best of luck.

Here are some ...: For a 36-year person, stone passage from kidney through ureter is the most common cause for such described scenario. CT with no contrast should be the preferred initial study, which can be followed with contrast study as needed. If stone was not identified, cystoscopy would be done to complete the evaluation. But, in general, the patients with hematuria should be evaluated to a reasonable extent.
