None if Done Right: Ultrasonics have been used for decades. They're safe and effective. However, they need to be used only by a trained and licensed professional. The main concerns are slight damage to the tooth roots if the instrument isn't used/angled properly, and slight discomfort if the energy is too high. They also can't reach into tight spaces well. A licensed hygienist or dentist will always do it correctly.

Very effective tool: The ultra sonic is a very effective instrument in our office. The only contraindication was many years ago, when pacemakers were not shielded, there was a danger of this unit affecting the pacemaker. That is no longer a concern as pacemakers are now shielded against the effects of ultrasonic units.

Sensitivity: Some people experience sensitivity after ultrasonic cleanings, especially if they have a lot of tarter build up and swollen gums. But this sensitivity usually goes away.
