See below: Hard dark skin is referred to as callus and is a result of abnormal pressures being applied to the toe from either a malpositioned bone, a spur protruding off a bone and friction with the skin causing a callus. The darkening could also represent bleeding from small capillaries that penetrate the skin often seen by soft tissue lesions commonly referred to as plantars warts.
