Tough it out (sorry!: I wish there was an easy way to recover from tonsilectomy but generally the 1st week for adults is rough. In general, stick to a diet thats easy to swallow (mashed potatoes, pasta, etc), drink lots of fluids because a lot of the pain comes from spasm after the surgery.Swallowing helps stretch out these muscles and you will feel better. Make sure you are getting enough electrolytes like potassium.

More time needed: If tonsillectomy was 5 days ago, the tonsil beds are undergoing the process of sloughing, where the surgical areas lose the clotted "scabs" that form after removal of the tonsils. The muscles around the tonsils are sore from the recent surgery, and it's impossible to move your tongue without disturbing these areas - it's likely the cramping will decrease in time, but check in with your surgeon.
