What is the rehabilitation process for hip fractures like?

Physical therapy: Working with a physical therapist to increase range of motion, strength and improve gait is generally recommended. Patients usually start with a walker and progress to a cane or no assistance with time. Early weight bearing is encouraged in most cases.

Rehab: Hip fractures are treated either by putting a pin through the fracture (called a gamma nail) or by doing a hemiarthroplasty which is one half of a total hip replacment. Following either, the rehab process involves working with a physical therapist to learn how to transfer safely from bed to chair or wheelchair, beginning to walk, usually with a walker or crutches and then strengthening.
