It depends : Depends on what we call gray level of radiation. Higher gray level of radiation produces significant changes to cells. These may include scar tissues to 2ndary malignancies. Also neck radiation has a number of indications including thyroid disorders and malignancies. So it depends.

Swallowing effects: Radiation therapy to the neck is usually employed with nodal disease, either primary as in lymphoma or metastatic squamous Ca from oral cavity or pharynx. The most common complication occurs when the effect is on the hypopharynx and cervical esophagus at which time the salivary glands are destroyed and radiation fibrosis causes dysphagia.
