Several: It can be broken down to basically this. Healthy, gingivitis, mild periodontitis, moderate periodontitis, and then severe periodontitis. It mainly depends on the degree of bone loss and soft tissue infection. Those can further be classified as either acute or chronic and generalized or localized. Hope that helps.

Stages of gingivitis: Gingivitis is a stage of gum disease in and of itself. Here is the stages healthy, mild gingivitis, moderate and severe, then mild, moderate and severe periodontitis . If you do not treat the gingivitis it can lead to major gum issues.

Gums that bleed: Gingivitis is the beginning stages, and by definition, your gums are inflamed, and you might see them bleed when you brush and floss. If this is left untreated, then the infection moves deeper into the jaw, and it progresses to the more severe, periodontal disease.
