Is gingivitis hereditary?

7 doctors weighed in across 3 answers

No but communicable: Gingivitis is a bacterial infection. It is possible there may be some hereditary circumstances but the bacteria cause the disease. If you control the bacteria you control the disease. You may want to check with your dentist or look up the perio protect method as it has been shown to be effective in controlling these type of problems as the disease can be passed to those you kiss.

Bacteria causes it.: Gingivitis is inflammation of the soft gum tissue, the diagnosis implies that the bone that supports the teeth is not affected. Like some other conditions, you may inherit a tendency toward gingivitis, but you cannot not inherit the condition. It is caused by germs accumulating at the gum line.

Usually no: A juvenile form of gum disease is hereditary, but the usual gingivitis that so many get is usually just from neglect (not flossing or seeing the dentist regularly.).
