Not usually.: Gingivitis or gum inflammation is usually reversible if you remove the cause of the swelling with the help of your dentist or hygienist in addition to excellent dental hygiene. If untreated it can lead to periodontitis--an often painless swelling of the gums and supporting tissues which causes bone loss, affects heart disease, and is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Don't think: When it comes to your gums, there's nothing permanent. After a thorough professional cleaning, and good homecare/ hygiene, you minimize inflammation and gingivitis, but when you let your oral hygiene go for long period, like don't floss, don't see dentist regularly, etc. Then your gum disease and inflammation usually worsens with calculus, etc build up. So, you always have to keep great hygiene.
