Mouth guards: Mouthguards can help align the teeth if they are not custom. In other words, if you buy one at a sports store. If your teeth are really misaligned they can actually help align the teeth. If your teeth are straight then a properly fitted mouthguard can keep the teeth from shifting.

No: To prevent tooth movement mouth guard would have to be constructed so that both upper and lower teeth are firmly held during activity. Their design is to prevent tooth tooth damage and concussion, not to retain teeth. Talk to your Orthodontist about time in mouth guard vas time in retainers.
