See below: A whipple procedure is done usually in an attempt to cure early stages of pancreatic cancer. It is a complicated procedure with serious potential side effects. Approximately 3-4% of people undergoing this procedure will die from complications. Digestive problems and diabetes may be a long term complications.

Major surgery: Whipple surgery involves removal of a part of the pancreas, small intestine & bile duct with several new surgical connections performed. Best performed by a well experienced general surgeon who has done many of these procedures. Risks of bleeding, infection, poor healing, pancreas leak, diabetes, etc.

Indications: Whipple procedure( pancreatico- duodenectomy), si done for patients felt to be potentially curative by this resection. For cancers in the head of the pancreas, or duodenum it offers the best chance for cure or long term survival. It is unusual to be used in treatment of colon cancer.
