Possibly none.: For scaphoid fractures that heal, either through immobilization or surgery, minimal long term effects are noted. However, scaphoid fractures that do not heal may lead to arthritic changes in the wrist. These changes eventually cause wrist stiffness and pain. Arthritis can often be tolerated with braces and medications, but occasionally corticosteroid injections or even surgery is necessary.

Scaphod fracture: A non union or improperly healed fracture can lead to death of the bone and/or advanced arthritis of the wrist causing debilitating pain and possible need for surgery with removal and/or fusion and loss of function/strength.
