Light blockers: The intense light from the operating microscopes used in some type of eye surgeries have the potential to harm the delicate retina. The normal response to bright light would be to avert your eye or close the lids. During surgery, this cannot happen due to anesthesia. The eye is protected by placing a small opaque contact lens or similar device on the cornea and remove it when needed.
