It does not: An acl tear will not heal. However, it does not always require surgery, if you decide to avoid all pivoting activites. Many patients do not feel shifting after an acl tear unless they perform these activities. Any shifting or swelling episodes after an acl injury would be an indication to be evaluated fully by your friendly neighborhood sports medicine orthopedist!
