About how long does the first orthodontic appointment last?

12 doctors weighed in across 7 answers

About an hour: It depends on what all is done. The first appointment for my patients is usually for orthodontic records...Photos, molds of your teeth, and the necessary x-rays. The first actual appointment involving brackets is usually an hour, sometimes a little shorter.

An hour or less.: What do you call the first appointment? If it is the records appointment, you will have impressions made of your teeth, photos taken, necessary x-rays done and then a consultation to discuss treatment, cost and payment options. Spacers between the front and back of the first molars may also be placed at this time. The next appointment is to place the brackets, bands and wires and again can be up t.

Consult: The very first time you see an orthodontist, they will do an exam and report findings and options to you. There may also be a need for impressions or x rays. Every office does this differently so the time it takes can vary. You should speak to the office you plan to go to and ask how long they expect the appointment to take.

Depends: Consult could be around 30-45 minutes. Records could be the same. Placement of braces can take up to 90 minutes.

Depends: On what they are doing, but to band and bond braces as well as take a full set of records my office schedules 90 minutes to cover all of that.

Health care: health care of any kind, including Orthodontic care, is a service, not a commodity. First visit may last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the malocclusion and the individual practitioner's normal procedures. If you are planning on seeing an Orthodontic Specialist, call the office and ask for the anticipated time of your initial visit.
