Depends on reason: Embolization is indicated for renal angiomyolipomas in the setting of bleeding from the tumors. In such cases, the procedure can be life-saving and can also help preserve kidney tissue (as opposed to taking the whole organ out). In skilled hands, it is considered to be relatively safe and necessary procedure. As with all vascular procedures, the major risk is bleeding from the site.

Very safe: For elective treatment, most agree catheter directed embolization of aml's over 3-4cm in size as they have a spontaneous bleeding rate which is significant. Other than pain at the treatment site, there is minimal risk from angiography and non-target embolization. The kidney is spared and the risk of future bleeding is minimized. I only do this when the treatment team involves a urologist.
