How much is a lot?: As an adult, you'd have to actively be trying to eat toothpaste to have any adverse affect. It likely would make you nauseated. A child can have the same effect with much less. The Fluoride products sometimes given to children can cause nausea if swallowed as well.

Usually nothing: You can swallow toothpaste and nothing would happen. The worst reaction would be nauseated and vomited. Fluoride level in toothpaste is very low (.32%) and thus should cause very limited reaction.

Depends: It depends on how much and your body mass. If a baby swallows a whole tube of tooth paste it can be fatal. My main concern for adults is systemic fluoride. I am not use if a 1 time event is bad, but chronic swallowing of large amounts of tooth paste can be dangerous.

A lot: Probably need to swallow a bathtub full to be toxic. Toothpaste made to be expectorated after use, but occasionally swallowing some after brushing is not harmful. If the crowns of teeth are still forming, up to about age 12, excess fluoride consumption can stain teeth. Review fluoride levels in your water supply with your Dentist. Only use a pea-sized portion of toothpaste when you brush.
