Most likely: Using crutches after surgery allows you knee more time to heal and not take the pressures of daily life so quickly. While not a rule, usually a period of modified activities and crutches will help your knee heal faster and get you back to activities quicker!

Up to you: I usually tell my patients to get rid of the crutches when they feel their knee is strong enough to stand. If all you had was a debridement. Then there is nothing that you are going to damage by walking on it.
