Minimally Invasive: A small video camera is inserted through tiny poke-holes in the skin, into the knee and the insides of the knee visualized. Other instruments may be inserted through similar small incisions to work on damaged structures. It is minimally invasive surgery.

Knee arthroscopy: Two or three portals are typically made and the arthroscope is maneuvered around the knee with inspection of all three compartments: patellofemoral, medial and lateral compartment. The menisci, articular cartilage and cruciate ligaments are inspected and if damaged are addressed.
