Major swelling can: Any major orthopaedic extremity procedure can cause blistering theoretically. Classic fracture blisters occur when the fluid from local swelling tracks toward the subcutaneous layer of the skin resulting in blistering. This can happen in much the same way after siginificant surgery, especially when major swelling is involved as the fluid fins the pathway of least resistance- often toward the skin.

Swelling: pressure in the tissues from swelling after surgery can cause blisters to form. Elevation and intermittent cold therapy can help reduce the swelling that causes the blisters. Once formed, you need to protect the skin.
