How do i treat a muscle strain?

Various things: Acutely, cold (ice) can reduce the swelling and discomfort. Later on, heat may feel better. A short period of rest is okay, but gentle stretching and exercise after a few days is okay unless the strain is severe. Over the counter pain relievers may help the discomfort. If these fail or the pain is severe, see your primary provider or sports specialist.

Rest: Muscle requires rest to give it a chance to heal and recover. Icing to reduce edema and inflammation is helpful, anti-inflammatories can reduce inflammation and decrease discomfort and gentle stretching can prevent cramps and reduce potential scaring.
