Sleep study: Sleep apnea can only be diagnosed by a sleep study. The increased snoring and feeling of throat closing when laying down is suspicious for sleep apnea but you can have these symptoms without sleep apnea as well. Without more information i can't really blame the discectomy on your snoring/throat closing issues. Your primary doctor can order a sleep study or you can see an ENT for this.

Need a sleep study: Your description sounds like sleep apnea, but to get a well informed answer, you need to talk to your doctor about a sleep study. The study hopefully will provide the information necessary to determine if it is sleep apnea and what level...Snoring, mild, moderate or severe. There could be other health concerns that may need to be addressed. Don't hesitate.
