Usually not: Diastasis recti is lateral separation of the rectus muscles that run vertically on either side of the midline of the abdomen, usually caused by pregnancy. It generally is only of cosmetic significance, causing laxity of the abdominal wall that cannot be improved with exercise. It is the reason that most abdominoplasties are performed.

Yes: Other than the unattractive appearance of the abdomen, diastasis weakens the abdomen and causes problems with some exercises. On a long term basis there is some reason to think that it may lead to back problems since the rectus muscles are the natural balance to the paraspinal muscles of the back.

Not usually: Almost all women have diastasis recti after pregnancy or changes in weight. It causes a visible bulge in the lower and/or upper abdomen. It usually is asymptomatic otherwise.
