Usually not: The most common cause is gilberts syndrome a genetic syndrome where a specific liver enzyme it missing. Patients with this syndrome can have elvated bilirubins when fasting or stressed. They live a normal lifespan and the elevated bilirubin may be protective. There are other causes of elevated bilirubin like gallstones, but you probably should check with your doctor.
