Both are safe: Both Pantoprazole (which is generic for protonix) and Nexium (esomeprazole) are proton pump inhibitors to reduce acid secretions in your stomach. They are both safe and very effective. Pantoprazole being available generically is much less expensive than nexium (esomeprazole). Omeprezole (generic for Prilosec is also a ppi- and nearly the same molecule as nexium (esomeprazole)- "the new purple pill") is inexpensive and available without rx!

Neither: None of these drugs are safe since they increase the risk of iron and B12 deficiency, pneumonia, fracture, c. difficile intestinal infection. A much safer med would be ranitidine. The best treatment for heartburn is a diet devoid of wheat and milk products (only butter and ghee are ok to consume)
