Genetic links: There is a growing trend to look for genetic links to epilepsy. There is some evidence that family traits can be associated with seizure risk. The trait of sickle cell is not directly related to epilepsy, but patients with the trait who develop seizures must be careful about which medications they are given. They are prone to more side effects and tend to metabolize the medications differently.
