Inherited: Sickle cell anemia is an inherited, non-sex linked genetic mutation ( actually several mutations) that leads to the formation of an abnormal hemoglobin called hemoglobin s. If someone inherits 2 sickle cell genes (1 from each parent), then sickle cell anemia is the result. If only 1 mutation is inherited, sickle cell trait is the result. The gene is passed from parent(s) to children.
