A 36-year-old member asked:

Are there any homeopathic remedies for varicose veins?

No: A number of natural supplements and herbal products such as horse chestnut, venotonic agents, vitamin k, vitamin c, gingko and wich hazel claim to help with common symptoms of varicose veins. Unfortunately there is no evidence reported to support this. I recommend support hose, leg elevation and exercise to manage symptoms of varicose veins if treatment such as vnus closure is not an option.

For the most part, Dr. McNeill is right. There are no homeopathic medicines that will change the appearance of abnormal veins. Horse chestnut and, especially, certain phlebotonics have been shown to decrease swelling due to varicose veins but that is only a temporary solution. If you have varicose veins and swelling, you should see a phlebologist and be evaluated for more definitive treatment.

Yes but questionable: There are several natural supplements or herbal remedies that "supposedly" treat venous issues, including horse chestnut, vitamin E ...Etc. Unfortunately, all reports of their results are anecdotal only, and appear limited to individual cases. There is no good, reputable, reproduceable scientific data that shows that any of these agents actually do any good. Patients may try them at their own risk.

The one venotonic (medicine for veins) that has been shown in good quality studies to make a difference in leg vein related symptoms (especially swelling) is Dalflon 500. Unfortunately, it is available in the US.

Not available in U.S. Of note, they have a FANTASTIC animation regarding venous disease on the website of the company that makes Daflon.

For symptoms: There are better meds in europe, like daflon 500, not approved in usa, that help symptoms like pain and swelling but don't eliminate vein disease. In us, there are some things that help... Graduated medical compression stockings, exercise, citrus plus bioflavonoid caps, horse chestnut seed extract, rutin, french maritime pine bark pycnogenol caps, reservatrol, but see your doctor first to ask!

Not really: It really depends on what you mean by homeopathic. If you mean ways that do not involve modern medicine and surgery then perhaps your answer is yes. The symptoms from varicose veins are generally bulging, heaviness, and aching of the legs. Many of these symptoms can be relieved with medical grade compression stockings. An evaluation by a physician dedicated to venous disease is the best next step.
