Trauma or bruxing: Tmj can be caused by trauna or a poor bite and associated bruxing (clenching and grinding). Dis location occurs when the ligaments in the joint are injured or very loose from yers of bruxing.

Many things: Disclocation of the disc caused be caused by trauma or something like over opening your mouth too wide. Imj syndrome is often caused by bruxism. (unconsious grinding of the teeth during )sleep. This can be caused by a malocclusion (bad bite)or stress.

See a specialist: I would like to know who offered you the diagnosis of tmj. Was it your doctor, dentist, chiropractor, ent, physical therapist, tmj/tmd specialist? You should really see a tmj/tmd specialist to proceed from there.

Causes may include, misalignment (malocclusion) of or trauma to the teeth or jaw, teeth grinding (bruxism),, poor posture, stress or anxiety, arthritis or other inflammatory musculoskeletal disorders, excessive gum chewing.
