Purpose of question?: Heparin (unfractionated, ufh, or low molecular weight, lmwh) helps prevent blood clots (venous thromboembolisms, vte) such as dvts and pes. Increased use of vte prophylaxis is a quality metric for many hospitals. Ufh and lmwh can increase bleeding and bruising. However, in moderate to high risk patients the risk/benefit profile is favorable. Each md/patient needs to indvidualize of course...
