Can a waterpik replace flossing?

No: However, some folks just will not floss. That being the case, i believe that a waterpick (or air floss) is better than nothing. Manual flossing removes plaque from the surface of the tooth and stimulates the gum tissue. The water streams can do some of this stimulation but not to the same degree as floss.

No: No but they are helpful tools in fighting gum disease and should be used along side with brushing and flossing.

Not as effective: A Waterpik is better than not flossing at all, but not as good as proper flossing. A Waterpik can remove plaque above gum line but not below as floss does.

Sometimes: A water pik is an adjunct to proper brushing and flossing. In some instances, especially with people who have dexterity difficulties due to arthritis and other ailments, a water pik may be the best option. But for those who think it can replace flossing may just be a lazy way of getting out of doing it. Don't use the wp on too high of a setting because it can damage the gums or teeth (4 max).

Not a replacement: A waterpik and/or airflosser are great products, however they are not a replacement for good flossing habits--they are a replacement for not flossing. This is not the same thing. These tools can be incorporated in your regular dental home care to stimulate gum tissue and help clean around braces or under dental bridges but it is still not better than floss. Sorry to be the bearer of this news.

Interdental brush OK: Twice daily flossing is the primary way to keep your teeth healthy over a life time. Skip a day and it is like you never flossed! toothbrushing, especially long and hard is complete crap! waterpics were debunked years ago. Air floss is the newest gimmick, see if it is around in two years! try proxibrush or go-betweens pipe cleaner like bristles that clean inter dentally.

No: The answer is no. Flossing properly with dental floss is the hands down best way to clean between teeth and prevent interproximal cavities and gums disease. All other methods may help to some degree but are not as effective. Having said that, and I hesitate to even say it, but doing something is better than nothing. However, I believe we should always strive to do our best in everything.
