A member asked:

I am 55 years old and want to know if being on a dose of 150mg of topomax for bipolar for a long period of time can have a bad side effect on you?

Possibly: Topamax (topiramate) has many potential adverse risks. Kidney stones may be prevented with vigourous hydration, narrow angle glaucoma may occur, metabolic acidosis can occur with surgery or if kidney disease arises, cognitive issues mainly affecting short-term memory or speech can reverse when drug is stopped, heat stroke has been reported in kids.

Bipolar: Best to discuss with your psychiatrist as you would have discussed the problems caused by your illness and the side effects from topamax (topiramate) and any other medications. Untreated bipolar disorder is certain to have negative short and long-term consequences whereas your treatment may or may not cause side effects for you. Hope that helps.
