Cause of anemia?: Anemia (low hemoglobin) has many causes. A common cause is iron deficiency anemia (ida). However, if the cause of anemia is not iron deficiency, then supplemental iron is useless. Therefore, the first step is to figure out why the anemia is present -- eg bleeding, lack of bone marrow production, vitamin deficiency, etc. Ida has micro(=small)cytic(=cells) red blood cells reflected by a a low mcv.
