Work up is needed as not all anemias are iron deficient, there are numerous other causes. Even if believed to be through iron deficiency work up for bleeding sources as well as possible malabsorptive states, such as celiac, for example, should be considered.

It is likely that hemoglobin is 8 nor hematocrit. However, anemia in an adult male needs to investigated to rule out internal bleeding. It would be prudent to consult a GI specialist.
